What is subtitle.im?
Managing YouTube captions automatically across videos
Desktop Chrome users watching YouTube can install subtitle.im to control switchable captions and manage duplicate tracks. The extension inspects video frames locally in the browser using OCR to detect burned-in subtitles. When both burned-in text and YouTube soft captions appear simultaneously, the extension handles the duplication based on saved user preferences without uploading video frames or subtitle text to an external server.
Caption control modes and language matching
Users choose between three global caption modes inside the extension. Follow YouTube leaves native settings alone, auto-open turns on available subtitle tracks for each video, and auto-close shuts off switchable captions. When burned-in subtitles and YouTube captions appear in different languages, the extension can close the soft captions automatically, ask the user first, or keep both tracks visible. Manual changes made directly in the YouTube player override current global, channel, or video rules for that specific viewing session only, restoring saved rules upon reloading or opening another video.
Granular rules and free trial allowances
Global settings apply across all videos, but Pro subscribers can add channel-specific rules or individual video exceptions. The free tier requires no email or sign-up, providing an allowance of 10 successfully handled videos without a monthly reset. Only successful caption closures count toward this limit. Pro upgrades unlock unlimited video handling, channel rules, video exceptions, and the memory of confirmed closures.
