E-commerce software is judged on one number that most of it does not report honestly: how many people who intended to buy actually did. Everything else — themes, catalogue features, inventory rules — is downstream of whether checkout works on a slow phone.
The listings here cover storefront platforms, checkout and payment flows, subscription and recurring commerce, digital product delivery, and the post-purchase layer of shipping, returns, and receipts.
Two things separate this category from Finance, which it borders. Finance tools care about recognising revenue; e-commerce tools care about capturing it. And the constraints differ by what you sell: physical goods bring inventory, shipping, and returns; digital goods bring licensing, delivery, and a tax picture that changes with your customer's country rather than yours. A platform built for one handles the other badly, and the mismatch is not obvious until you are already migrating.
What to look for
- Checkout on a bad connection
Open the checkout on a throttled mobile connection before choosing. Every additional field, redirect, and script between intent and confirmation costs conversions that no theme recovers.
- Total cost, including transaction fees
Monthly price is the small half. Percentage fees, payment processing, and per-app charges make platforms with a cheap headline the expensive option at volume.
- Digital versus physical fit
Licence keys, instant delivery, and digital-goods VAT are a different problem from inventory and shipping rules. Pick the platform built for what you actually sell.
- Owning the customer relationship
Check that you can export customers, orders, and email consent. Platforms that keep the customer list are the hardest ones to ever leave.
