Not every useful product is software you sign up for. A lot of the web's best tools answer one question: how much fabric a blind needs, what a job should cost, how a paycheck changes between two kinds of contract, where to put the marks on a length of conduit. You type in a few numbers, you get an answer, you get on with your day.
This category collects those: estimators and calculators for trades and small businesses, converters between formats and units, generators that turn an input into something usable, and checkers that tell you whether a plan holds up. Many are free, some keep part of the result behind a small one-time payment, and very few need an account.
The good ones are easy to tell apart. They show their working, name the rates or standards the numbers come from, and say plainly what they leave out. A calculator that hides its assumptions is guessing on your behalf.
What to look for
- It shows its working
The formula, the rate table or the standard behind the number should be on the page. When a tool cites its source, you can check the answer instead of trusting it.
- It says what it leaves out
Every estimate assumes something: federal tax but not state, standard sizes, a typical waste factor. A tool that states its limits is more useful than one that seems to cover everything.
- No sign-up for a single answer
Asking for an email before showing a result is a trade most people will not make for a quick calculation. The best tools answer first and offer the extras after.
- Units, rounding and precision you can see
Inches or millimetres, rounded to what, accurate to what: small details decide whether a number is safe to act on at a workbench or in an invoice.
