JPEG, PNG or WebP files up to 25 MB go into the browser for local decoding, scaling down to a working copy before any charting starts. Image to Crochet processes photos directly in the tab without automatic uploads, keeping picture data local unless an optional AI settings draft is deliberately triggered with a 512 px preview.

Grid controls and median cut palettes

Stitches across range from 16 to 120, while row counts follow the picture proportions and stop at 220. Median cut splits the color box along its widest side to pick between 2 and 12 yarn colors without randomness, ensuring identical inputs return identical palettes. Each square averages the underlying pixels, featuring heavier grid lines every ten stitches and accompanying letters matching the legend for readable monochrome printing.

Manual edits, charts and files

Square by square editing lets makers repaint individual cells and swap palette colors to match physical yarn supplies. Finished projects save out as a PNG sheet or a one-page PDF containing the grid and legend, or as an editable chart file up to 256 KB stored directly on the device. Gauge conversion and commercial yarn brand mapping are intentionally omitted, requiring makers to verify sizing with their own physical swatches before starting construction.
